THE ROLE OF MUSIC

v  Opening titles
v  End credits
v  Underscore

UNDERSCORE – background music used to accompany scenes throughout the
        film

v  Diegetic
v  Non-diegetic

The Underscore acts as an ‘unspoken language’ and can take many forms, including:

v  Illustrative music - there to represent something on screen (water, falling)

v  Evocative music - sence of time or place, makes you feel emotion.

v  Pastiche music - copying a style of music.

v  Dramatic use to enhance tension - repeating motives to build tension.

v  Comic music, literal

v  Music to enhance emotional impact - sad moment, build tension.

v  The use of leitmotifs - themes that are attatched to characters for example dark vader in star wars.

v  Diegetic music

Most music in film is non-diegetic. It is presumed not to be heard by the characters.
